The 1980s saw a continuation of Nigeria’s dominance on the continental stage. While the Eagles surprisingly suffered a group stage exit in the 82 AFCON, Nigeria reached the final in three of the following four tournaments.
Fourteen years after their maiden triumph, another generation of stars, spearheaded by the likes of Daniel Amokachi, Sunday Oliseh, Emmanuel Amuneke, Samson Siasia, Finidi George and the magical Jay-Jay Okocha, with the experience of veterans Keshi and Yekini repeated the feat in Tunisia under Dutch coach Clemens Westerhof. The 1994 victory was followed by a first-ever World Cup appearance, further solidifying Nigeria’s status as a global football force.
However, while they remained contenders, the new millennium brought a period of inconsistency.
In 2000, they reached the final at home but lost to Cameroon via penalty kicks. Video replays revealed that Victor Ikpeba’s missed spot-kick, which handed the Indomitable Lions the title, had crossed the line.
Although Nigeria secured four bronze medals in the next five tournaments, they failed to replicate their earlier success. The pejorative term “golden bronze” was coined during this time. Injuries, internal conflicts, and managerial instability plagued the team, leading to the disintegration of the national team.

In 2006, the two teams met in the semifinals of the AFCON in Egypt, with Ivory Coast winning 1-0. Two years later, Ivory Coast won again, 1-0, in a group-stage encounter in Ghana.
In 2013, on their way to a third AFCON triumph, Nigeria edged Ivory Coast 2-1 in a quarter-final match in South Africa. Emmanuel Emenike and Sunday Mba scored for Nigeria.

Not everything went well, but we are relieved. All the matches we have seen have a different scenario. In the match of Nigeria, they had one or two opportunities against Equatorial Guinea.
