What do turnovers show in betting?
Each element related to a betting market has its own special interest. The same, of course, applies to turnovers or in other words the amount of money placed on bets on a particular market.
In the table above you can click on the arrows next to the words “Turnover 1X2” and “Turnover O/U” to bring to the top the games that have received the highest amounts from the bettors. With a single click of a button, you have in front of you the information about the games of the day that collect the highest bets.
This is how we see a trend for how and where money moves. A factor that can definitely show us several things, but not in itself capable of making us winners. No one won by looking at the turnovers, but many benefited by reading the turnover of the bets correctly.

Leagues with high betting volumes – Betfair volumes
If you study for a long time you will see that the behavior of the players follows a trend. The highest turnover is made by commercial games, followed by the secondary ones and at the bottom are those that do not interest the general public enough.
Let’s see this using some examples:
Always during the days of the Champions League the betting amounts in the games of the tournament are high. Even players with meager participation on other days are betting on Champions League matches. It is by far the most commercial event on the planet, with very large turnovers every time.
The Premier League is consistently high in the players’ preferences, followed by the other major European leagues. Germany, Spain, Italy and France, the so-called Europe Big-5 receive several bets from the bettors as well.
Apart from the classics, there are also the… strangest things. Like what happens in the Netherlands. The matches of the division gather big turnovers on Fridays, but Saturday matches of that same division are ignored by the bettors. This is explained by the many more options available to them on that particular day.
Portugal is a league that rarely has high turnovers. The same applies to Mexico and Chile.
When the turnover of a match in the bet is “strange”
The first thing a player who wants to study turnovers should do is make sure he knows what the “normal” turnover is per category and day. That is, what is the expected amount for each market / league.
Once he knows the “normal”, it will be easier to perceive the “strange”. That is, the turnover that does not keep pace with the data so far. The prices that stand out from the usual average of a category.
Marked as “strange” turnover is always the high turnover. That is, when a market receives more money (bets) than expected based on the “normal” turnover, which we mentioned above.
The low volumes do not offer us special information about our game. It can only indicate the public’s indifference to that betting market.
Example of a “strange” turnover
A Saturday football derby in the Premier League, Italy, Germany and Spain is usually at the top of the turnover. The rest of the games of the specific category follow and the French are further back.

However, we must reiterate, that if the player does not study for a long time the normal course of the turnovers, it is almost impossible to distinguish the “strange” cases.
How turnovers affect prices – Betfair volumes
The sports betting companies have made their own excellent preparation in the field of turnovers. Their algorithms know what and when to wait, hitting low or high alarms on the unexpected.
Their reaction is the precautionary measures they take. The more suspicions they have on an event, the more they increase the rake, trying to secure their own profit, regardless of what players and teams have in store.
The “sinking” of a value when it “attracts” an event does not mean that this value will be confirmed. It means that the bookmaker takes measures to ensure the profit he wants if the value is confirmed.
In conclusion, Betfair volumes are not an easy field and experience is required to fully understand them.
Five truths and lies about betting turnovers
- Bookmakers do not fix matches. Fixed matches do occur, but betting companies are not the ones to blame.
- Bookmakers do not set the prices depending on who will win the market, but they set them in such a way (and at such a rake) that will allow them to observe indifferently and with a sure profit the result of the market.
- A high turnover leads to price changes in the set but does not necessarily mean that the event that you are betting at will eventually be confirmed.
- Bets are sometimes triggered by a miscalculation of the bookmaker for the set of odds, without the market being suspicious in any other way.
- The turnover of a match is a tool in the hands of the bettor and with its proper use, can bring him valuable information about an event.
