At the same time, FIFA is introducing the “best third-placed teams” qualification system. It’s the same system like the UEFA Euros. This means that from the 48 teams, the best two in each group will go through to the next round, and also the 8 best third placed teams.

The expansion to 48 teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup also means significant changes to the number of matches and the overall length of the tournament. In previous World Cups, fans watched a total of 64 matches. Now, the number jumps to 104 games, making World Cup 2026 the biggest football event ever hosted.

New Rules Coming to World Cup 2026

Four new football rules will officially come into effect at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The new rules are primarily aimed at reducing time-wasting, increasing the actual playing time and improving the fairness in key match situations.

Faster Substitutions

Under the new rules, players will have only 10 seconds to leave the pitch on substitutions. If a player wastes more time, the incoming players will be forced to wait for one minute before entering.

If you place a bet on a player market which shows the “Golden Sub” icon, and the player you picked is substituted off, then the bet will roll over to their replacement (the substitute) at the same odds.

New Throw-In Time Limit

Players will also have just 5 seconds to take a throw-in. If they fail to do it, possession will change.

Medical Treatment Rule

Players receiving medical treatment on the pitch will now be required to leave the field and wait one minute before being allowed to return to the game.

VAR Changes for World Cup 2026

One of the biggest innovations for the tournament will be VAR decisions. VAR Officials will now step in on second yellow card calls and corner kick decisions, if a clear refereeing mistake happens. VAR referees will be able to make these corrections automatically without requiring the main referee to review the incident on the pitch-side monitor.

For many football fans across Nigeria and around the world, these new rules should improve match rhythm. They cut down on needless delays, too. And they bring more fairness to the game.
